Alongside former minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Bersama has quickly unsettled the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.
Analysts Warn Bersama Needs Clear Vision Beyond PKR & Anwar
In August, veteran MP Wong Chen resigned from PKR to join Bersama, intensifying pressure on PH, which has already suffered defeats in recent state elections.
Bersama positions itself as a progressive, multiracial alternative, rejecting the “spoiler” label despite evidence from Johor’s Perling seat, where its candidate’s votes tipped the balance against PH.
Analysts argue Bersama risks being seen only as a spoiler without a broader coalition or vision. Public policy expert Ahmad Mohsein Azman noted that frustration with Anwar Ibrahim’s government is fueling Bersama’s early momentum, but the party must prove it is more than “PKR minus Rafizi’s grievances.”
Nik Nazmi remains unfazed, insisting Bersama will grow on its own terms. Observers see the party less as a government‑in‑waiting than a warning shot at PH.
If it plays its cards right, Bersama could assert itself within Malaysia’s political landscape over the next five to ten years.
