Controversial lecturer Solehah Yaacob is challenging her dismissal from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), accusing the institution of acting unprofessionally.
Solehah, who holds a doctorate in Arabic linguistics, said she was terminated within 24 hours in April without the right to appeal. She has filed a case at the Industrial Court, rejecting IIUM’s offer of six months’ compensation.
Industrial Court to Hear Challenge Against IIUM
IIUM confirmed her dismissal effective April 27, stating she is no longer permitted to use any title or claim affiliation with the university. Solehah criticized the timing, noting she had just received the Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) award from the higher education ministry the day before.
The MyRA framework, introduced in 2006, evaluates universities’ research performance. Solehah’s sacking comes after she attracted widespread attention for controversial claims about Malay history and civilization, including assertions that the Romans learned shipbuilding from Malays and that Malaysia’s iron ore deposits were caused by meteor strikes.
She maintains that IIUM’s decision was unjust and abrupt, and her legal challenge could test how Malaysian universities handle disputes involving academic freedom, reputational risk, and disciplinary action.
