Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who turned 101 in July, reflected on global and domestic turmoil in a recent social media post.
With decades of political experience, he expressed concern over what he described as “strange leaders making strange decisions” across many nations, including Malaysia.
Malaysia’s Justice System Criticized for Unequal Punishments
Mahathir criticized inconsistencies in Malaysia’s justice system, noting that minor offenders are punished while those accused of major corruption walk free and even secure high office.
He warned that disregard for justice, accountability, and human life is becoming normalized.
Internationally, Mahathir lamented ongoing wars that have killed tens of thousands, questioning why no effective efforts have been made to end them.
He cited the detention of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro by the United States and the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as examples of troubling global developments.
He also condemned the devastation in Gaza and described the Russia‑Ukraine war as “unnecessary,” arguing Ukraine cannot defeat Russia despite the immense human and material cost.
Mahathir concluded that the world is in a state of upheaval, with extraordinary events now occurring routinely and indifference prevailing.
