Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) localisation policy should strengthen the domestic automotive industry without limiting competition, consumer choice or investor confidence, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
He stressed that Malaysia needs investment, technology and stronger local participation while ensuring consumers continue to have access to a wide range of EV choices.

Chow said Malaysia should encourage more local companies to participate in the EV supply chain, while attracting greater technology transfer and creating high-value jobs.
He also raised concerns over the latest completely built-up EV policy and the possibility of excessive concentration in the sub-RM100,000 segment.
He urged the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry to address concerns over policy communication and implementation, saying clear and predictable rules are important for investor and business confidence.
Chow also highlighted Penang’s EV infrastructure plans, including a target of 500 charging stations by 2030, compared with around 460 currently.
