PRAIA GRANDE, BRAZIL – At least eight people were killed in a hot air balloon accident in southern Brazil, according to Santa Catarina governor Jorginho Mello. The balloon, carrying 21 passengers, caught fire inside the basket on Saturday morning. Thirteen people, including the pilot, survived, and no one is missing. Police said the pilot attempted to lower the balloon and urged passengers to jump, but some were unable to escape before flames intensified.

The balloon later crashed due to loss of suspension. Victims included two couples, a mother and daughter, an ophthalmologist, and a figure skater. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals. The operator, Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, has suspended operations, stating it had complied with all regulations and had no prior accidents.
