In his newly released book, Behind The Stories, Tan Sri Tong Kooi Ong reveals his covert role in prompting the FBI investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). In September 2015, he hired Canadian lawyers to deliver encrypted PetroSaudi emails from whistleblower Andre Justo to the FBI and other authorities. This led to a Wall Street Journal report on September 19, 2015, announcing the FBI’s investigation. Tong recounts meeting FBI officer Robert Heuchling in May 2016 and later learning about former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s announcement that billions had been stolen from 1MDB. He also details meetings with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Najib Razak regarding the scandal.
