Federal Court Now Deferring Verdict on Challenge to Kelantan’s Sharia Law: Ruling Pending

The Federal Court’s nine-judge panel deferred its verdict on a case challenging Kelantan’s Sharia Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, post-hearing arguments, indicated a future decision. 

Federal court deferring verdict on challenge to Kelantan’s Sharia Law 

Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and her daughter contest 20 Sharia offenses, alleging the state assembly overstepped. Besides Tengku Maimun, the panel includes eminent jurists. Tengku Maimun urged all to respect legal principles, cautioning against seditious remarks. 

Concerns arose over statements made by a counsel during the hearing, prompting reminders not to discuss the case publicly. The Chief Justice clarified the case’s nature, emphasizing it challenges legislation, not the Sharia Court or Islamic standing.
