The giant ‘Ibu Pertiwi’ flag, which fell into the Sarawak River during bad weather, was successfully retrieved by five security guards late last night. The incident occurred at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, Kuching, where heavy rains and strong winds wreaked havoc, uprooting trees and structures. The flag, measuring 25 by 12.4 meters, is a key landmark in Kuching, flying from a 99-meter-tall flagpole recognized as the tallest in Southeast Asia. The RM30 million flagpole, officially launched on December 31, 2023, was funded by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), Petronas, and Shell to symbolize the state’s oil and gas development.
