The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) clarified that the alleged RM230 million misappropriation by a non-governmental organisation involved public donations, not official zakat funds. Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki explained that some collections meant for a state zakat body were never channelled.

Two individuals, including the NGO’s deputy chairman, were remanded to assist investigations. Preliminary findings suggest the suspects, also company directors, colluded between 2018 and 2024, with the deputy chairman transferring funds into his company’s account for investments and personal use. MACC stated the case highlights irresponsible misuse of donations, with investigations ongoing and scope being expanded.
