Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has criticised the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) move to freeze overseas assets worth RM4.5 billion belonging to the late ex-finance minister Daim Zainuddin. Mahathir described the action as “abuse” against Daim’s family since no charges have been filed. “What was Daim’s crime? If he did wrong, charge him. If not, don’t take abusive action,” Mahathir said. The frozen assets, located in the US, Singapore, Japan, Italy, Jersey, and the UK, were reportedly undeclared during investigations. Mahathir stressed that all actions must be backed by clear legal processes to uphold fairness and the rule of law.
