SINGAPORE, Aug 12, 2026 – A 26‑year‑old Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint after officers foiled an attempt to smuggle duty‑unpaid cigarettes into Singapore. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the man entered Singapore on Aug 4 in a Malaysia‑registered car. Officers directed the vehicle for enhanced checks, uncovering more than 600 cartons and 900 packets of duty‑unpaid cigarettes concealed in the floorboard – equivalent to about 138,000 sticks.

The suspect was arrested, and both the exhibits and case were referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation. ICA stressed its commitment to safeguarding Singapore’s borders while facilitating trade and travel. A spokesperson for Singapore Customs said: “This case highlights the serious consequences of cigarette smuggling. Offenders not only evade taxes but also undermine public health policies. We will continue to work closely with ICA to ensure smugglers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
