MAS 737 Nose Dive: Malfunctioning Pitot-Static

1 min read

The Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) has revealed their findings on why the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft went down to a nose dive. The main cause of it was that the airplane’s Pitot-Static system, which is the component that tracks the airspeeds of the aircraft, was malfunctioning.

The malfunctioning led to the Pitot-Static system to provide wrong airspeeds to the aircraft and it deactivated the aircraft’s auto pilot in mid air. For now, the CAAM has informed the airline to do a thorough checking for all their 45 737-800s to see if there are any other faulty ones.

Back in 2018 a Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330 flying from Brisbane had suffered a minor problem due to the aircraft’s Pitot covers not being removed. That would have caused another major headache if not identified earlier. From then on regulators in Brisbane made a strict procedure for operators (airlines) to do thorough checking on their aircraft.
