Will The MIPP Pullout Dents PN’s Multiracial Image in Melaka? The Malaysian Indian People’s Party’s (MIPP) decision to stay out of the MIPP Melaka election contest has undermined Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) bid to project a multiracial image, political analysts have told Free Malaysia Today, the portal reported on Sunday (Nov 1).
Why the MIPP pullout in the Melaka election
Why the MIPP pullout? MIPP president P Punithan announced on Thursday (Oct 29) that the party would sit out the state polls after failing to reach an agreement with the PN leadership.
According to FMT, Punithan said the party would not compromise its principles just to secure seats, and that the Indian community deserved proper recognition and representation.
Analysts see PN coalition strain

Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said the withdrawal showed that PN’s non-Malay component parties carried little weight in seat negotiations with Barisan Nasional (BN).
He said MIPP had made clear it was a principled party that would not be sidelined, and its move reflected unhappiness with PN for failing to protect the interests of its component parties.
Mazlan said MIPP’s absence could weaken PN’s multiracial image at a time when Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN are showcasing multi-ethnic cooperation. He added that PAS, PN’s dominant party, was seen as having given in to Umno by accepting just seven seats for PN and its allies, and that PAS views MIPP as having little electoral impact.
Universiti Malaya academic Awang Azman Pawi said the pullout pointed to deeper structural weaknesses in PN rather than a one-off seat dispute. He said PN was facing “a crisis of coalition governance, political trust and internal power-sharing”.
According to Awang Azman, tensions between PAS and Bersatu, leadership disputes and competing strategies had left smaller component parties feeling sidelined.
Indian votes in Gadek and Bemban
Mazlan said the withdrawal could affect PN’s Indian support in Gadek and Bemban, two constituencies with significant Indian voter bases.
Nominations for the Melaka polls were held on Saturday (Oct 31), with early voting set for Nov 10 and polling on Nov 14. In the 2021 state election, BN won 21 seats, PH five and PN two, FMT reported.
