Dutch police face unprecedented violence from fireworks; historic Amsterdam church ablaze, two dead in incidents.
Police in the Netherlands endured “unprecedented violence” on New Year’s Eve, pelted with fireworks and petrol bombs in cities including Amsterdam, Breda and Rotterdam. Union head Nine Kooiman was among officers targeted. A 17-year-old boy and 38-year-old man died in separate fireworks incidents.
Church Fire
In Amsterdam, the historic 19th-century Vondelkerk church overlooking Vondelpark caught fire early New Year’s Day, its 50-metre tower collapsing; the cause remains unknown. Rotterdam’s eye hospital treated 14 patients, mostly minors, for injuries. In Germany, two 18-year-olds died in Bielefeld from homemade fireworks. A nationwide fireworks ban is planned for 2026.
