Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that Malaysians are not required to immediately replace their MyKad when the new version is introduced on June 1. While it remains mandatory for citizens aged 12 and above to hold the identity card, existing holders can continue using theirs without rushing to the National Registration Department.
Current MyKad Remains Valid Despite New Version
The new MyKad will feature 53 enhanced security elements, including laser engraving, holograms, ultraviolet features, guilloche patterns, microtext, QR codes, and upgraded encryption chips. With over 20 million Malaysians currently holding MyKad, Saifuddin stressed that replacement will be gradual and not compulsory at launch.
