Former Perak executive councillor Paul Yong’s rape conviction faces new scrutiny after his accuser retracted her allegations. The Indonesian domestic worker’s lawyer testified at the Ipoh High Court that she withdrew the claim through a statutory declaration in Indonesia. Yong’s lawyer, Salim Bashir, said this testimony would support his appeal to nullify his conviction and jail sentence. The Federal Court earlier allowed new evidence, suggesting the victim may have provided false testimony. Yong was convicted of raping his maid in 2019, receiving an eight-year prison term. The Federal Court will hear his appeal on March 17.
