Prime Minister Anwar Defends SST Hike, Highlights RM4 Billion in Savings

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reassured Malaysians that ongoing fiscal reforms, including the expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), will not compromise public welfare. He emphasized that the removal of blanket subsidies—such as electricity support for the wealthy—would save RM4 billion, which would be redirected to healthcare and education.

Anwar defended the government’s approach, highlighting targeted initiatives like STR and SARA that benefit nine million citizens. He stressed that increased allocations for schools and hospitals are evidence of responsible tax redistribution. Despite criticism, Anwar urged Malaysians to understand the macroeconomic reasoning behind the reforms set for July 2025.
