A viral video, from Indonesia, shows a man extinguishing fire on a push cart or TukTuk with a bottle of Coca Cola. There are many videos on YouTube and elsewhere showing the use of Coke for clearing drains, for cleaning utensils with claims that Coca Cola is bad for drinking. But in this case, an ‘expert’ chips in:
The main reaction when pouring Coca-Cola onto a fire fueled by oil or gasoline is physical cooling and asphyxiation, not a new complex chemical reaction. The high water content in soda absorbs heat (through evaporation), while carbon dioxide (CO₂) released when the bottle is shaken helps cut off the oxygen supply to the fire.

However, this method is very risky because:
- Boilovers: The heavier water in soda sinks beneath the hot oil, instantly boiling and splattering burning oil in all directions.
- Sugar residue: The high sugar content can caramelize and actually become additional fuel once the water evaporates.
For safety, use a Class B fire extinguisher or a wet cloth to extinguish liquid fires properly! DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
