New: Radio Host Ismahalil Goes To Jail for 30 Years Jail for Drug Trafficking

1 min read

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7, 2026 – The Court of Appeal has sentenced radio host and Bapakku FM founder Ismahalil Hamzah to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of drug trafficking. The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel overturned a previous High Court ruling that had acquitted him. Judge Radzi Abdul Hamid explained that the earlier judgment contained errors in evaluating the defence, and that Ismahalil failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case. The court concluded the drugs were in his possession and under his control for the purpose of trafficking, a charge carrying severe penalties under Malaysian law.

At 53, Ismahalil faces grim prospects: decades behind bars, with little chance of release before old age. His conviction underscores the uncompromising stance of Malaysian courts on drug offences, where trafficking is treated as one of the most serious crimes. In a final video message shared by his wife, Ismahalil expressed acceptance of the ruling, urging his children to care for their mother and asking friends to continue his business ventures. His calm demeanour contrasted with the harsh reality of a long prison term that will define the remainder of his life.
