The REHDA Institute has urged immediate urban renewal to tackle the decay of ageing strata properties, citing risks to public health and safety. Speaking at the International Strata Symposium on April 8-9, 2025, during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship, REHDA warned that neglecting urban decay could escalate crime, economic stagnation, inequality, and property devaluation, especially in Kuala Lumpur’s poorly maintained flats. The institute called for policy reforms to ensure transparent, community-driven renewal while protecting property rights. Without action, REHDA cautioned, declining property values and social fragmentation could worsen, necessitating costly repairs. The government has committed to legal safeguards to support these efforts, Bernama reported on May 10, 2025.
