The government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is considering legal action against Meta if it fails to curb fake accounts, especially those misusing the names of the Malay Rulers. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said Meta had been warned but appeared not to respect the institution.
Warning to Meta
He added that the upcoming Online Safety Act (ONSA) could impose penalties, including fines up to RM10 million, with daily fines of RM100,000. “We want platforms like Facebook to cooperate to ensure safety for Malaysians,” he said. The government is reviewing measures to strengthen accountability and online safety.
