PETALING JAYA, Aug 26 — Tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing has urged the customs department to focus on cracking down liquor smuggling instead of targeting private collectors. He said comments suggesting that keeping large alcohol collections at home could breach the Excise Act 1976 were misleading, eroding public trust in the law. Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying later clarified no licence is needed for duty-paid liquor kept for personal use. Tiong stressed that possession alone does not imply intent to sell, warning that such enforcement “misdirects resources and frustrates the public.”
