A group of grassroots DAP leaders and members have openly criticized Jelutong MP RSN Rayer for defending the Veeramakaliamman Hindu temple in Perlis, which was demolished by state authorities last Thursday. The temple, located in Bukit Lagi, Kangar, was torn down after officials claimed it was built on government land without a permit.
In a joint statement signed by 14 individuals, including Selangor DAP Youth deputy chief Nur Rahim Nasir and former Dusun Tua assemblyman Edry Faizal, they stressed that leaders must uphold the rule of law rather than encourage defiance. “No one is above the law, not even national leaders,” the statement read, warning against double standards.
Rebuke Rayer
The signatories argued that Rayer’s remarks risked confusing the public and sending a dangerous message that illegal land encroachment could be justified under the guise of religion. Edry Faizal added, “If something is wrong, we must say it is wrong. Leaders should educate the people, not chase popularity.”
Rayer had earlier condemned the Perlis government’s action, calling it insensitive and warning against PN’s rise to federal power. However, critics within DAP and even allies in Umno countered that defending unlawful construction undermines credibility and weakens respect for the law.
