1 min read

At 6:22 AM on March 18, 2025, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake rattled North Sumatra, Indonesia, its epicenter 41 km east of Sibolga at a shallow 10 km depth. Tremors rippled across Malaysia, startling residents in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) quickly assured the public there was no tsunami risk. In Kuala Lumpur, office workers paused as buildings swayed briefly. Social media buzzed with reactions. One X user posted, “Just felt tremors in KL from a M5.0 quake in Sumatra—only a few seconds!” Another noted, “M5.5 in Sumatra, felt in Malaysia—seismic gap alert!”
