The jailing of Jacob Zuma 79, former President of South Africa, erupted in violence in South Africa. Troops are deployed to control the situation after at least 45 people were killed in rioting and deadly stampedes.
Zuma is jailed for defying a constitutional court order to give evidence at an inquiry probing high-level corruption. The case revolves around his tenure as President, that is nine years in office until 2018.
The protest began with Zuma supporters calling for his release. But it quickly developed into a general outpouring of anger over persistent poverty and inequality in South Africa.
The country broke away from Apartheid rule 27 years ago. A total of 19 people were killed in Gauteng and 26 in KwaZulu-Natal after stampedes as residents raced for supplies while looters ransacked stores.
