A popular Malaysian X user, who is in the medical industry, stated that someone asked her about her race, and then told her that she speaks good English. This is seen as something offensive to many as it is an inappropriate remark to make.
X user tired of backhanded compliments
Furthermore, users add that our country is filled with diversity, and it would be normal for us to be fluent in multiple languages. Others added that statements like that could be discriminatory towards others.
Another user adds that people tend to ask them if they’re mixed race or if they studied abroad due to their English speaking skills. But, the irony is that they studied in Malaysia and are not someone of mixed descent.
