MELAKA, Aug 20, 2026 — Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) finds itself in a strong bargaining position as both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) signal interest in forming alliances ahead of the upcoming state election. Melaka BN chairman and Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh likened the situation to “a beautiful maiden with many suitors,” saying BN will carefully weigh all offers before deciding its political direction.
Speaking outside the High Court in Ayer Keroh after attending his defamation suit proceedings, Ab Rauf stressed that BN remains open to discussions with any party, including PKR, PAS, or others, provided negotiations begin with BN retaining the 21 seats it won in the 2021 state election. He added that while seat exchanges may occur, the total must remain unchanged.
Of marriages and betrayals
Ab Rauf confirmed no formal talks have been held yet, including on the proposed “BN Plus” formula, and said any negotiations would take place at UMNO headquarters. He dismissed speculation over UMNO Youth chief Akmal Saleh’s refusal to contest if BN partners with PH, calling it premature.
“We will choose the suitor who offers the best dowry,” Ab Rauf remarked, adding that locals eagerly await BN’s decision on its electoral partner.
