The unauthorised feeling was recorded on Facebook, leading the Kuantan City Council to take action. The council considered the peltophorum pterocarpum tree a heritage tree and had incurred significant preservation costs.

Liau faced charges under Section 35H of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, resulting in a RM4,000 fine or two months’ imprisonment. His counsel expressed remorse and commitment to better actions in the future.
