PETALING JAYA – Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli claims that diesel leakage in Malaysia is partly due to fishermen’s malpractice. He explained that some fishermen sell subsidized diesel to large foreign vessels in exchange for fish. “Instead of struggling to catch fish, some of our citizens trade diesel in the open sea,” Rafizi stated. Rafizi did not say the entire loss on diesel subsidies is from fishermen smuggling. But he says such a cartel existed.

This allegation has prompted a challenge from Isham Jalil, who questions the feasibility of such smuggling. Isham argued that it would require tens of thousands of fishing boats to transport the fuel unnoticed, questioning, “Wouldn’t the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and the navy see this?”
