HIV Among IPT Students Rising, Begins as Early as Age 18

Malaysia recorded 222 HIV infections among university students aged 18–19 in 2024 alone, part of 1,091 cases in the past five years, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

He stressed that risky behaviors are starting early, highlighting Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a preventive tool. However, underage access to self-testing and treatment remains limited due to parental consent laws. 

Dr Fazidah Yuswan from the Health Ministry added that 36% of total HIV cases remain undiagnosed, with expanded community screenings and NGO-distributed HIV self-test kits underway to reach vulnerable populations and reduce stigma in testing.
