The race for the 16th Johor state election officially began after nomination day concluded with contests confirmed in all 56 state assembly seats, setting the stage for a closely watched campaign ahead of polling on July 11. Early voting will take place on July 7, while about 2.7 million eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots.

The contest is expected to be highly competitive, with caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi leading Barisan Nasional’s bid to retain the two-thirds majority secured in 2022. Pakatan Harapan is contesting every seat despite its cooperation with BN at the federal level, while Perikatan Nasional is fielding candidates in 33 constituencies.

Adding further uncertainty is the electoral debut of Parti Bersama, which is contesting 15 seats. Multi-cornered contests dominate the election, with three-, four- and five-way battles expected to split votes and make outcomes in several marginal constituencies difficult to predict.
