JOHOR BAHRU, July 11 — The Johor state election is shaping up as a crucial test of cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), particularly PAS, which is fielding 11 candidates. PAS has urged supporters to reject Pakatan Harapan (PH) in seats it does not contest, echoing tactics used during the 2019 Tanjung Piai by‑election that preceded the Sheraton Move.

Analysts note Johor’s outcome could signal broader Malay‑Muslim political realignment ahead of GE16. BN’s unilateral decision to end its electoral pact with PH has heightened tensions, while PAS’s strategy may deepen distrust between the two governing partners. Merdeka Center’s Ibrahim Suffian said Johor is a bellwether for national alignments, with BN holding an edge but PN poised to benefit if BN‑PH split votes. Remember, in 2022, the Johor state polls did force the way for the general elections in the same year.
