A Malaysian man, Velu, 32, was sentenced to 19 months and two weeks’ jail in Singapore after pleading guilty to mischief by fire. He accepted $2,500 to harass a debtor and locked a family of seven inside their Tampines flat before setting fire to the front door at 4.25am on Dec 8, 2023. The victims included a 41‑year‑old man, his wife, two young children, parents, and sister.

Velu, facing financial hardship, initially rejected the job but later agreed after receiving a $400 advance. He chained the door, poured petrol, and ignited the blaze, photographing it for his employer before fleeing to Malaysia. The family escaped unharmed. Velu surrendered in September 2025, citing his wife’s pregnancy and medical expenses as motive.
