A 24‑year‑old Malaysian man, Harvin Velanggany, was sentenced on April 13, 2026, to eight years in prison and six strokes of the cane after attacking a 32‑year‑old domestic helper in Rochor. The incident occurred on May 27, 2024, when the victim, intoxicated after drinking beer, was first harassed by another man.

Instead of helping, Velanggany followed her, produced a condom, and forced her onto the grass. The victim later sought help from a nearby hotel employee, who alerted police. Velanggany faced one count of assault and one count of theft, with the latter considered during sentencing.
