SINGAPORE – A 38-year-old air-conditioning technician, Sugumar Surendran, has drawn attention after tattooing a portrait of Lee Kuan Yew on his neck. The migrant worker from Tamil Nadu said he admires Singapore’s founding father for building a “golden country” where fairness and equality prevail.

Despite initial hesitation from the tattoo artist, Sugumar insisted, saying the ink reflects his belief in Lee’s values. His personal struggles, including family tragedies, shaped his outlook and strengthened his resolve to work hard in Singapore. He hopes the tattoo will remind others of Lee’s contributions and inspire resilience in the face of hardship.
