The issue of the “early Eid” celebration has become a heated topic among Muslims in this country. The situation prompted the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, to refer the matter to the National Fatwa Committee.
Eid Celebration date
Mohd Na’im expressed his intention to discuss the issue with the committee to avoid any confusion like the one that occurred last year. He emphasised that the power to announce the date of Eid lies with the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, who has been entrusted by the Council of Rulers. When asked about preparations for any possible situation, Mohd Na’im advised Muslims to be patient and wait for the announcement.
According to the International Astronomy Center, the end of Ramadan is predicted to fall on Thursday, April 20, 2023, but some countries may not be able to see the new moon of Shawwal on that date. Most Muslim countries may announce the start of Shawwal on the following day, making Friday, April 21, the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
