Penang’s DAP shaken by internal rifts and public discontent

1 min read

Pakatan Harapan (PH) risks losing its supermajority in Penang, according to internal estimates shared with The Straits Times Singapore. Voter dissatisfaction stems from unmet promises in the 2022 manifesto, including anti-corruption reforms and governance improvements.

DAP shaken

Rising “anti-federal sentiment” among the public over tax revenue sharing and a mining licence scandal have further eroded trust, with accusations of politically motivated decisions. Locally, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s feud with former DAP leader Lim Guan Eng has tarnished the party’s image. Lim criticised the 2023 quit rent hike, claiming voters were misled, while Chow defended it as a fair adjustment since 1994.
