PN: Anwar’s Bid for Immunity Will Fail. Najib Also Failed In 1MDB Precedent

Perikatan Nasional (PN) criticized Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for seeking qualified immunity from lawsuits, arguing it mirrors a failed attempt by former PM Najib Razak in the 1MDB case. PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan cited a 2019 Federal Court ruling that a prime minister, as a public officer, is not immune from civil lawsuits for misfeasance or personal acts. PN expressed confidence in the judiciary’s impartiality and criticized Anwar’s aide Shamsul Iskandar Akin for issuing a misleading statement denying Anwar sought absolute immunity. Anwar’s recent court filing seeks to refer eight constitutional questions, including immunity, to the Federal Court regarding a lawsuit by his former aide Yusoff Rawther.
