Rafizi Ramli has questioned the logic of UMNO’s cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH), arguing that UMNO was never meant to play second fiddle but to govern. He said UMNO’s reliance on PH after its heavy defeat in 2022 was driven by survival, citing Zahid Hamidi’s legal troubles as part of the equation. Rafizi noted that PH’s emotional response to UMNO’s moves was misplaced, as politics is ultimately about self‑interest.
Alliance Strategy
He compared the current strategy to Mahathir’s 1999 tactic of scaring non‑Malay voters with PAS, which he believes has failed repeatedly. Rafizi stressed that alliances are temporary “joint ventures” and not permanent bonds, urging PH to build its own strength instead of depending on UMNO. He added that fragmented voter groups, both Malay and non‑Malay, require a more nuanced approach, warning that obsession with power risks alienating the electorate.
