For the second time in two years, parts of the Sahara Desert experienced rare snowfall, transforming its sandy dunes into a winter wonderland. On New Year’s Day, Algerian photographer Karim Bouchetata captured snow falling in Ain Sefra, a town known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Situated at an elevation of 3,600 feet between the Atlas Mountains and the desert, the area occasionally sees snow during winter. The storm, originating from Europe, brought freezing rain and snow to higher elevations in Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Local residents enjoyed the unusual sight, while streets remained clear as snow melted on warmer surfaces.
