A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sabah early on Feb 23, with tremors felt across parts of Sabah, Sarawak and even over in neighbouring Brunei and Singapore, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). The quake was centred about 49 km west of Kudat in deep waters, and there is no tsunami threat reported.

Residents from Kota Belud to Kuching reported feeling the shaking, with some sharing their experiences online. Despite the strength of the quake, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and fire and rescue teams conducted precautionary patrols and checks in coastal and adjacent districts.
MetMalaysia said it will continue monitoring the situation closely and urged anyone who felt the tremors to assist by submitting data through its official reporting channels to better understand the seismic impact.
