KUALA LUMPUR, June 20, 2025 – The new 5% sales tax on raw sugar, effective July 1 under the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST), has raised fears of rising refined sugar prices. MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd, the nation’s top sugar producer, is seeking government clarification as the levy hikes costs, announced in the 2025 Budget. CEO Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad warned that while industrial costs might shift, consumer prices, capped by government controls, cannot. Amid rising production expenses, MSM pushes for a price adjustment, leaving uncertainty as talks with the Finance Ministry continue.
