Tian Chua Warns PKR of “Disastrous Defeat” Without Recovery Plan

1 min read

PETALING JAYA, Aug 26 — Veteran PKR leader Tian Chua has warned that the party risks a “disastrous defeat” in the next general election unless it urgently devises and implements a robust recovery plan. He said PKR must rebuild its political capital and momentum, likening the task to a corporate turnaround where leaders must change reality rather than merely comment on it.

The former vice-president, sacked in 2023 for contesting Batu as an independent, has since returned to the fold at the invitation of party president Anwar Ibrahim. He noted that PKR’s grassroots had weakened, contributing to defeats in Johor and Negeri Sembilan. Many supporters from the 1998 Reformasi movement, he said, felt neglected after PKR entered government, leaving them demotivated and marginalised.

Tian Chua added that PKR faces competing expectations: Chinese and Indian voters feel the party has not fought hard enough for equal treatment, while Malay voters see PKR as failing to defend perceived Malay rights. “In the end, you are stuck in the middle and are not going to please anybody,” he said.

He urged PKR to consistently promote cross-ethnic policies and rebuild connections from the ground up, warning against last-minute promises before elections.
