Ukrainian Troops Teach Western Trainers New Battlefield Robot Tactics

1 min read

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21, 2026 – Ukrainian soldiers are turning the tables on their Western counterparts by teaching them how to deploy ground robots in modern warfare. The exchange is part of Operation Legio, a Norway-led multinational training effort conducted at Camp Jomsborg in Poland, where NATO trainers and Ukrainian troops share battlefield practices.

While Western militaries traditionally instruct Ukrainian forces, Brigadier Atle Molde, the Norwegian commander overseeing Task Force Legio, admitted that in the case of robotic warfare, “it is the Ukrainians who are teaching us.” Ukraine has rapidly expanded its fleet of uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), which are used to attack Russian positions, evacuate wounded soldiers, transport heavy gear, and mine enemy areas.

Molde emphasized that training about battlefield robot tactics must reflect real battlefield conditions, meaning robots are now integrated into exercises. “When the robots become an important part of how they operate, then we have to start using those in training as well,” he said.

The lessons are not without caveats. Ukrainian troops highlighted the limitations of UGVs, including terrain challenges and restricted camera visibility in tall grass. Unlike aerial drones, ground robots hug the terrain, leaving them vulnerable to obstacles. Norway is studying these insights to determine when UGVs are effective and when they are not, tailoring lessons to its own environment, such as snowy northern regions.

Molde described Camp Jomsborg as a “valuable sensor” for identifying what Norway’s forces need to learn about modern warfare. He noted that Ukraine’s expertise ensures Western militaries gain updated knowledge on how to integrate robots, what they can be used for, and where their weaknesses lie.

The collaboration underscores how Ukraine’s battlefield innovations are shaping NATO’s future strategies, with war robots increasingly central to operations.
