KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has rebuked opposition claims that Putrajaya’s Urban Renewal Bill aims to sideline Malays in favour of Chinese property interests. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar stressed the legislation seeks to uplift urban Malays living in dilapidated housing, citing examples like the Seri Perlis flats in Kuala Lumpur. He dismissed accusations of gentrification, asserting his duty to defend Malay rights while acknowledging the bill was not flawless. Anwar invited constructive input from the opposition but urged them to stop politicising the issue, emphasising the government’s intent to improve citizens’ living conditions.

Meanwhile the Urban Renewal Bill, originally scheduled for debate in the Dewan Rakyat on Aug 28, will likely be postponed to the next parliamentary sitting, government sources said. And the opposition claims a win in stalling the bill.
