Unlike Europe, Malaysian restaurants generally do not offer free drinking water and would usually opt customers for the sugary drink option. There are times when mineral water is offered, but it can cost RM5 to RM40 per bottle, which many would then opt for a sugary drink. 

Free Water Urged to Reduce Sugary Drink Intake 

X user states that it is apparently common in other developed countries. In Japan, stores like Muji would have a free water dispenser for their customers. Restaurants will also offer water for free to their customers. 

Some say that there are restaurants in Bangsar that serve tap wa ter to their customers, only to charge them RM4 afterwards. This mandate may help those who are financially savvy, and those who are conscious of their health.
