A Malaysian man, Yap Ching Gun, 23, has become the first money mule sentenced to caning under Singapore’s enhanced anti-scam laws. Yap was jailed for seven months and given one stroke of the cane after collecting over S$8,000 (US$6,265) from an elderly scam victim. He pleaded guilty to conspiring to collect cash while knowing it would facilitate criminal proceeds.
Money Mule
The offence occurred after Dec 30, 2025, when new provisions introduced mandatory caning for scammers and discretionary caning for mules. Yap was recruited via Telegram by “Hades,” who offered commissions and allowances for collecting payments disguised as brokerage investments.
