TUMPAT – A horrifying family dispute erupted into murder on Friday night in Kampung Kok Bedollah when Mohd Suhairi Hasim, 46, a crane driver and father of two, was brutally hacked to death by his own cousin. The attack stemmed from the suspect’s accusation that Suhairi had infected his child, possibly with a contagious illness.
Elderly mother Wan Salma Wan Said, 68, was preparing for bed around 11 p.m. when she heard her son’s desperate cries of “ALLAH… ALLAH…” echoing over 20 times from outside. Rushing to the window, she called out, “Who are you fighting with now, Hairi?” but received no reply. Alarmed, she hurried to the spot near their home where Suhairi was washing his crane.
Horror in Tumpat
In the pitch-black night, her blurred vision initially tricked her into thinking the shadowy figure was her son. But it was the cousin. “The suspect was not far from Hairi (the victim), who was already lying on the ground covered in blood, and told me that he had attacked my son out of anger over matters involving his child.”
She screamed for nearby relatives to help. His body was rushed to Tumpat Hospital for a post-mortem and later buried at the local Muslim cemetery.
Tumpat police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie confirmed the arrest of the 40-something suspect, who tested positive for drugs and was remanded for seven days in Pasir Mas Court for further investigation.
