WASHINGTON – The US Supreme Court on June 29 rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a jury verdict that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming former columnist E Jean Carroll, ordering him to pay US$5 million. The court declined to hear Trump’s appeal without explanation, ending his legal challenge.

A Manhattan jury in May 2023 ruled Trump assaulted Carroll in a department store in 1996 and defamed her by calling her a “nut job.” Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan said the ruling affirms accountability, while Trump denounced the case as “weaponisation” and vowed to continue fighting.
