Blogger, social activist Din Merican dies at 87

Blogger and veteran social activist Din Merican has died at 87, marking the loss of a prominent advocate for governance reform and democratic accountability.

Known as “The Malaysian DJ Blogger”, Din was widely respected for his forthright views on institutional integrity, judicial independence and corruption. Born in Alor Setar, he was educated at Penang Free School before studying economics at Universiti Malaya. He later graduated from George Washington University School of Business and George Washington University.

Din Merican

Din began his career in the foreign service and later served at Bank Negara Malaysia before moving into the private sector.

Author Kee Thuan Chye described him as a principled, consistent voice committed to a plural and progressive Malaysia, whose writings championed institutional reform over personality-driven leadership.
